Encouraging Kids to Read Their Way to Free Riding
Rye Airfield, New England’s premier skate and bike park is host to nearly 100,000 kids of all ages per year, making us a sizable village. We like to use our influence on the young people that visit by stressing the importance of alternative sports options and education. Our experiences from working with school age children everyday have allowed us to recognize the lack of a tangible incentive to excel academically. It is for this reason that we started our own exciting program, called Read to Ride, which is available to all public and school libraries in New England as a tool to motivate young readers year round.
The Read to Ride program is designed to encourage kids eighteen and under to read their way to free riding time at Rye Airfield. This is a proven program that fosters the relationship between librarians and children in the community while also providing a valuable reward. When a child shows interest in Read to Ride, we ask that you take a moment to explain the program and its benefits. Participants can then read a book on their own or have a book read to them.
After a book has been completed, librarians have the discretion to guide the reader in choosing one of three options in order to obtain a stamp on the reading log we provide, please use your library stamp for this. The participant will need a total of five stamps in order to earn an all day pass to Rye Airfield (value of $33).
These options include:
- Writing a short essay or book review (1-2 paragraphs) on the chosen book.
- Provide a brief oral report about the book they have read.
- Draw a picture depicting the book they have read.
Kids can enjoy their all day pass to Rye Airfield once they have collected a total of five stamps just by presenting their reading log when checking in at the skatepark for the day. Every participant is encouraged to read as many books as they would like in order to maximize the benefits of the program.
If you are interested in Read to Ride, please have your librarian contact us so that we may send them a start up pack that includes high quality PDF versions of the Read to Ride flyer and reading log along with a letter welcoming participating libraries to the program.
We look forward to working with you as we expand the Read to Ride program.
Sincerely,
Beau Lambert
